Due to absence of oxygen sometimes plants and animals perform anaerobic respiration .Ex - tape worm in the stomach
or
-abscence of favourable conditions
-organisms switch to anaerobic respiration in presence of unfavourable conditions
-in humans, during rigorous physical activity, the muscle cells respire anaerobically to produce lactic acid which causes muscle cramps. At that time, oxygen reaching the cells is not sufficient, so this process takes place.
Hope these help.

Anaerobic respiration is a type of respiration that occurs both in plants and animals. This type of respiration happens in the absence of oxygen and takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.
It mostly occurs in bacteria and archaea in animals and prokaryotes, unicellular eukaryotes and also moulds, which are considered as higher plants.
In animals, when the cells are running out of oxygen they breathe through anaerobic respiration and give energy and in plants growing in water or water-logged places do this type of respiration.
