They used to work hard with there physical strength, which helped their body to stay fit and make there body healthy and diseases free body. There was very less technology at that time, that is the reason why there was no place for being lazy.

Our forefathers lived in a time when there was hardly any pollution, the lifestyle was simple and healthy, and food and water was unadulterated. The pressure of complicated jobs was nil. They ate well, exercised or did hard labour, and rested well. The overall result was a mentally and physically healthy life.
There was no overcrowding or over population and there were enough trees and greenery around to provide clean fresh air. Industries had not developed fully then and hence effluents were also practically nil.
These days, it is just the opposite of all the above factors, leading to health problems.
