Sonia flies from Sharjah to India via Dubai. She has to spend a lot of time at the airport and on airplanes. She leaves Sharjah at 6 pm on Friday and arrives in Dubai the next day. After a 2 hours stopover, she leaves for India at exact noon. She arrives in Delhi at 1 am. She returns to Sharjah after a refreshing holiday. She takes the same route on her flight back. But this time her stopover in Dubai is one hour less than what it was the last time. Including her layover, her average speed while in the airports and airplanes was 180 mph. Considering the time difference between these places, what is the distance between Delhi and Sharjah in kilometers? Dubai is 4 hours ahead of Sharjah, and 2 hours behind India.

She returns to Sharjah after a refreshing holiday. She takes the same route on her flight back. But this time her stopover in Dubai is one hour less than what it was the last time.

Dubai is 4 hours ahead of Sharjah, and 2 hours behind India.

To Find : what is the distance between Delhi and Sharjah in miles?

a) 3800

b) 3500

c) 4500

d) 4800

Solution:

She leaves Sharjah at 6 pm on Friday and arrives in Dubai the next day. After a 2 hours stopover, she leaves for India at exact noon

=> She reaches Dubai at 10 AM

Dubai is 4 hr ahead of  of Sharjah

=> She reaches 6 AM of Sharjah

Hence total 12 hrs journey   ( 6 PM to 6AM next day )

2 hrs stoppage

Dubai  2 hours behind India.

Leaves at 12 PM Dubai Means   2 PM India

reaches 1 AM india time

Hence   11 hrs journey

Total Journey time including layover  = 12 + 2 + 11 = 25 hrs

While retuning her stopover in Dubai is one hour less  Hence

Return journey time = 25 - 1 = 24 hrs  including stopover

Total Time = 25 + 24 = 49 hrs

Speed = 180 mph

Distance =49 x 180 = 8820 miles to and fro

distance between Delhi and Sharjah  = 8820/2  = 4410  miles

25 x 180 = 4500 miles could be if average speed was for from Sharjah to delhi only.
