In the poem the boy seems to be happily enjoying his childhood, represented by the ball, until it inevitably falls into the harbor of time. The boy anxious watches the ball sink to the bottom, knowing very well it is a part of him which will never be recovered, yet he continues to gaze at it with tear filled eyes. The poet asks (the readers) to let him be as he knows that countless in his life there'll come great moments of joy as well as sadness.
