Sound does not reflect equally by all substances. The hard material like metals, alloys(like steel), brick walls and metal coated sheets etc. are good reflectors of sound. The good reflectors of sound produce good echoes.

The soft and porous material is bad reflectors of sound. In fact, they are good absorbers of sound. Materials like clothes, carpets, paper, asbestos sheets and thermocole are bad reflectors of sound. These materials absorb the sound vibrations falling on them and prevent echoes.

In recording studio, auditorium and in cinema hall, sound is reflected from the walls, ceiling and floor and produce echoes. These echoes are a nuisance in auditorium or cinema hall because they interface in clear hearing. Therefore, sound insulation in necessary and useful at these places. This is done by covering the walls, ceiling and floor by sound proof (absorbing) materials like sound-proofing tiles, curtains and carpet etc. These sound absorbing materials reduce the reflection of sound and minimize the echo formation. That is why, in modern auditoriums or cinema hall, the people can hear properly the voices coming from speakers, singers, actors actresses.
