Sound needs a medium for propogation. This medium can be a sold, liquid or a gas. This means that sound can only travel in the regions where molecules are present. sound cannot travel through vacuum.Vacuum is a region where there is no air and hence no molecules present in it.
hence,we can say that sounds requires a medi for it's propogation.

because sound is a mechanical wave and needs a material medium like air, water, steel etc.for it's propagation.and it cannot travel in vacuum so it need a median to propagate
