That's because sound is a mechanical wave. ... In contrast, electromagnetic waves requireno medium, but can still travelthrough one. Since a vacuum is defined as lacking a medium, then sound and correspondingly, mechanical waves, cannot propagate through a vacuum. This is why we can't hear voices orsounds in space.

because sound travels in the form of mechanical waves. That's why it needs a medium .

simranps9967oy6fxj: it travels through light photons.
RajivShastry: It has dual nature :)
simranps9967oy6fxj: yes, you at right, I'll explain you the difference
simranps9967oy6fxj: sound waves are mechanical waves, when in vaccum, they waves become smaller and smaller and finally it doesn't exist. This is how sound doesn't travel in vaccum. Now, in light, the waves are electromagnetic waves, even if it's in vaccum the waves doesn't become small, it stays constant, so this is how light travels without a medium.
simranps9967oy6fxj: the*
simranps9967oy6fxj: speed of light has a constant value
simranps9967oy6fxj: This is why the waves dont become small
simranps9967oy6fxj: i hope you understand now
RajivShastry: The thing is, sound waves are mechanical waves. But you have not mentioned that in your answer.
simranps9967oy6fxj: I'm sorry, I'll mention it.
