Balancing equation :- To make the number of atoms in product and reactant equal.

It is important to balance the chemical equation because law of conservation of mass states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.

That's means the number of atoms in product and reactant should be equal.

Balancing the equation is done by hit and trial method.

Example :-

Mg + O2 -> MgO

Product :-

Mg = 1

O = 2

Reactant :-

Mg = 1

O = 1

Therefore, by observing we can see that in product the no. of atoms is not equal to reactant.

After balancing the equation

2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO
