Hey there buddy!

The simplest form of response in the nervous system is reflex action. This is a rapid automatic response to a stimulus which is not under the voluntary control of the brain, it is described as an involuntary action.

Mechanism of reflex action contains 5 steps, which can be further grouped to form 4 steps :

1) The receptor organ receives the stimulus and initiates a sensory nerve impulse.

2) Sensory or afferent nerve conducts sensory impulse from the receptor organ to the Central Nervous System(spinal chord/brain)

3) The neurons of the central nervous system (brain/spinal chord, depending upon which of them receives the impulse) analyse and interpret the sensory impulse and setup an appropriate motor impulse. Accordingly, the reflexes are termed cranial impulses or spinal reflexes, respectively.

4) The motor or efferent nerve conducts motor nerve impulse from the Central Nervous System to the effectors.

5) The effector organ produces involuntary response. This is either the movement of some muscles or secretion from a gland.
