Ladies and gentlemen, I have immense pleasure in welcoming you to this beautiful auditorium. At the outset, I wish to thank the organisers for giving me this wonderful opportunity to present my views about the world of business
before an august gathering.

When we talk of business, we generally refer to the small local trader, the medicine shop at the corner of this street or the vegetable vendor in our daily market. But, is that all about the business world or is there more, much more than meets our ignorant eye?Well, trade and commerce, as we know it, is only one part, an important part of the entire chain. Business does involve buying and selling, but it also involves procuring and manufacturing or assembling parts into whole. This country can proudly boast of its superior activities in all these spheres and more.

When we refer to business, we think of an activity which involves compromising on values and businessmen as people whose value system is questionable. This is as untrue as black and white. Of course, some businesses are run in not so desirable a manner, but so are other activities of life not conducted as they should be done.

The world of manufacturing involves setting up of plants or factories, which produce a wide range of products, from safety pins to automobiles. These units of production utilise their men and machines to produce some of the best articles of craftsmanship or engineering. Before beginning production, raw materials are procured, stored and used in the manufacturing process. The finished products are then produced and shipped to the traders for sale to customers.

Production of goods is scaled up or down depending on the demand. Variants of similar products are made to give the brand a character and separate it from competing brands. Attractive packaging is used to attract customers.

Besides manufactured goods, business has also developed in the service sector, an area which is gradually overtaking physical goods in terms of financial turnover. Hospitals have grown in the healthcare sector, hotels in the hospitality sector and so on.

The world of business in India has produced some great people like Jamshedji Tata, Ghyanshyam Das Birla, Pirojsha Godrej and Jamnalal Bajaj, to name only a few. In the United States, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and so on have been pioneers in their respective fields.

Ladies and gentlemen, one more point before I leave the podium. Please remember, everyday we use multiple products from the world of business and without business we would find it difficult to live our lives the way we are used to. From the toothbrush and toothpaste to our dinner plates and medicines, business has made life worth living.
Thank you!
