Answer:

Global warming is a steady rise in Earth's surface temperature.[1][2] Temperatures today are about 1 °C (1.8 °F) higher than 150 years ago.[3] Many scientists say that in the next 100–200 years, temperatures might be up to 6 °C (11 °F) higher than they were before the effects of global warming were discovered. Most noticeable changes by this increase in temperature is the melting of ice caps all around the world. Sea level is rising steadily because of continental ice melting into the sea. As a prediction, many cities are soon to be partially submerged in the ocean. Consequently, many part of the world have a major increase in temperature.

Among the Greenhouse gases, the concentration and increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere appears to be the main cause of global warming, as predicted by Svante Arrhenius a hundred years ago, confirming the work of Joseph Fourier more than 200 years ago. When people use fossil fuels like coal and oil, this adds carbon dioxide in the air.[4] When people cut down many trees (deforestation), this means less carbon dioxide is taken out of the atmosphere by those plants.

As the Earth's surface temperature becomes hotter the sea level becomes higher. This is partly because water expands when it gets warmer. It is also partly because warm temperatures make glaciers melt. The sea level rise causes coastal areas to flood.[5] Weather patterns, including where and how much rain or snow there is, will change. Deserts will probably increase in size. Colder areas will warm up faster than warm areas. Strong storms may become more likely and farming may not make as much food. These effects will not be the same everywhere. The changes from one area to another are not well known.

People in government and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have talked about global warming. They do not agree on what to do about it. Some things that could reduce warming are to burn less fossil fuels, adapt to any temperature changes, or try to change the Earth to reduce warming. The Kyoto Protocol tries to reduce pollution from the burning of fossil fuels. Most governments have agreed to it. Some people in government think nothing should change. The gas produced by cows digestion also causes global warming, because it contains a greenhouse gas called methane.[6]

Global Warming

Global warming is the phenomenon of the increase in the temperature of the atmosphere due to the presence of excessive greenhouse gases emitted mostly by the burning of fossil fuels.

Effects of global warming:

Global warming will results in the melting of the polar ice caps and raise the ocean level which will submerge islands and coastal lands. Some of the fastest sinking cities are Tianjin in China, Semarang in Indonesia, Jakarta in Indonesia,

Shanghai in China, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Hanoi in Vietnam, Chittagong in Bangladesh, and Kobe in Japan.

Island nations which will be submerged first by the rising sea level are the Maldives, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Fiji Islands, etc.

Due to extreme climatic conditions, millions of people will be displaced. There will cause a serious refugee problem as people migrate to other countries looking for resettlement. Cities in the US New Orleans, Louisiana, Miami, and Florida are being affected by extreme weather conditions due to climate change.

Global warming would cause unpredictable rainfall. A sudden flash flood will be followed by a long period of drought. This will cause scarcity of drinking water and irrigation for cultivation leading to worldwide food scarcity.

The burning of fossil fuels increases global warming and also depletes the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful effects of UV rays of the Sun. This will increase the cases of skin cancer.

Global warming would cause unpredictable rainfall. A sudden flash flood will be followed by a period of a long drought. This will cause a scarcity of drinking water. The shortage of water for irrigation will lead to the failure of agriculture and cause worldwide food scarcity.

The increase of harmful greenhouse gases will also result in acid rain. The acid rain will kill marine life and corrode buildings and historical monuments.

Prevention of Global Warming:

The catastrophic consequences of Global Warming can be mitigated by preserving the natural ecological system, shifting to sustainable development, and using more environmentally friendly energy.

Planting more trees will reduce the amount of harmful carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and reduce global warming. We need to shift to alternative energy instead of burning fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products. The burning of fossil fuels increases global warming and also depletes the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful effects of UV rays of the Sun.

Industrial waste must be treated properly before they are dumped. Using renewable energy like hydroelectricity and solar energy will help us to reduce global warming. Urgent steps must be taken to reduce exhaust emissions from motor vehicles, power plants, factories, and industries. Global warming needs urgent global actions for the survival of life on earth, our home planet.
