The political leader I look up to and greatly admire is our former president Dr. APJAbdul Kalam. Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India on 25th July 2002 andserved the office until 2007. He is a scientist turned politician and comes from a humble background. Popularly known as the “missile man of India”, he is a progressive mentor, innovator and visionary.Dr. Kalam is a man to look up to not only because he was the president of India but also because he has been a role model to the country in terms of technology and management. He incorporated spiritual and political thinking in his leadership. While he was the president, he made sure that he was always accessible to the common man and traveled toevery state, cutting across hills, deserts and seas and touched millions of people. Dr.Kalam has traveled across India to meet with over 2 million schoolchildren and initiatedeach one of those kids to dream and have a “personal vision”. He told the kids that we areall born with a divine fire in us, all we have to do is to give wings to this fire and fill theworld with the glow of its goodness. He is a living example of a leader who practices leadership discipline and propagates ittoo. He is a man with a vision and he is not afraid to travel unexplored paths to achievehis set goals. He initiated a goal of energy independence for India to free her fromdependence on fossil fuels and to help maintain a clean environment. He proposed to runthe Rashtrapati Bhawan on solar power but could not succeed as his term ended before hecould see it through.Dr. Kalam is a perfect example of how a leader should be. A true leader is one who issomeone who takes charge and inspires and motivates anyone and everyone he comesacross. Kalam is a leader with a vision, unafraid to be questioned, methodical in hisapproach, and respected by his people. His visions, goals and thoughts are a motivation tomillions of Indians. His focus has always been on transforming India into a developednation and he continues to ignite young minds to help build a better nation.
