Non-conventional Sources of Energy is the Need of the Hour

Blue skies and green grass, we cannot have as long as we use excess of gas. The aftermath and fallout of the excessive use of fossil fuels has adversely affected man. As a consequence, the present condition of our environment is like a patient lying in critical condition in the ICU of a hospital.

Renewable energy sources are the best bet in the scenario. And what can be a better renewable resource than the sun? In a country like India, if the abundant amount of sunlight available is harnessed properly it could mean an end to the energy crisis. It is the most abundant source of energy. The average global solar radiation is around 5 kilowatt hours (KWH) per square meter per day with the sunshine hours ranging between 2300-4300 per year. India is in the sunny belt of the world. The country receives solar energy equivalent to more than 5000 trillion KWH per year, which is far more than its total annual energy consumption. Besides, it is a renewable and clean energy source. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel resources. Once we master techniques to harness solar energy, it can be a vital source of power on all planets.

Solar energy could be a viable source of power generation for the next 1000 crore years. There are many technologies available for conversion of solar energy into solar power. For instance, solar photovoltaic (SPV) technology, photo galvanic cells, solar steam generators (solar concentrating power), solar tower or solar chimney, radio micrometers and thermopile are some of them.

It is the most relevant and appropriate time to harness solar energy in areas, states, and regions in our country where hydro electrical power generation plants are not viable. Installation of solar-power generation plants in such areas won’t only solve the energy problems, but will also ensure cleaner and purer environment.

The best option in front of us at present to tackle the problems posed by fossil fuels is the option of using alternative sources of energy. With energy consumption being the buzzword in developing economies around the world, fears of an energy crisis looming ahead are not totally unfounded. The non-renewable nature of fossil fuels makes complete dependence on these for future energy needs a very dicey affair. Renewable energy sources are the best bet in the scenario. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel resources. Once we master techniques to harness solar energy, it can be a vital source of power on all planets.

Imagining a future where clean air is no longer a dream and our cities are not smog filled concrete jungles, could well become a reality in the coming years if the world begins to increasingly adopt the use of cleaner options like alternate-fuel vehicles. The rise in economic activity and the burgeoning population have led to a tremendous demand in the transport sector, especially in urban India. By 2020, India's urban population is expected to grow fivefold to a staggering 200 million while pollution is expected to grow seven times. With this tremendous growth has emerged a very critical issue of keeping air and noise pollution in urban areas under control. If we can have three lakh electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads by 2020 including three wheelers, cars and scooters, we would have reduced pollution by 16 lakh metric tons, saved  rupees 3700 crores in foreign exchange earnings and substantially reduced healthcare costs.

There is no dearth of alternative sources of energy, if we have a will to harness them. All that is required is a shift in our outlook and concern for the future. We must replace the existing fuels with alternative green-fuels for a better and healthier tomorrow.

In conclusion it can be said that if we have to save our health and environment from the adverse effects of using fossil fuels, frugal consumption, and replacing the fossil fuels with alternative sources of energy are the two viable options. We must switch over to them as early as we can for a brighter, healthier and safer future!

"Non-Conventional Sources of Energy-

  • Non-conventional sources of energy are those sources of energy in terms of fuel and power that are not the traditional form or traditionally used sources of energy.
  • These are the sources of energy where energy is created and generated via using natural and renewable sources of energy i.e. wind, sun, tides, geothermal heat etc.
  • These sources of energy are renewable and non-terminating i.e. they renew themselves and do not go extinct and hence there is no extra pressure or over-exploitation of the source.
  • These resources do not get exhausted and hence work on the lines of sustainable development and using them doesn’t compromise the needs of the future generations to come.
  • These sources of energy are much more into easy access and there is a comparative low key expenditure and it rather works as a long term investment for good life, atmosphere and the future generations and our resources of survival.
  • These resources promote a healthy environment and atmosphere and doesn’t cause pollution, over-exploitation, undue pressure on resources or non-bio degradable waste or other such pollutants which add to the negativity in terms of the conventional sources of energy.
  • Example- Production of electricity via- Solar energy i.e. the solar sun panels.
  • Non- conventional sources of energy should promoted and widely opted and should replace the non-renewable and conventional sources of energy for the good of present, for the good of environment, for the future generation, to reduce non-degradable waste and to reduce and minimize the pressure on the natural resources that are exhaustive eg- coal."
