Good morning one and all present here. I'm ____________ from class X, and I deem it as my privilege to speak on the topic Simple Living and High Thinking. The first person who comes to my mind when I read or hear this statement is that of Mahatma Gandhi. He truly epitomized simple living and high thinking as he wore only a khadi dhoti spun by himself. He was an example of self-reliance and idealism.

When we consider this statement in the present scenario, what we find is a great setback to the ideals that our Father of Nation once established and stood for. Today, neither the living is simple nor the thinking high. What Tagore envisioned in his poem 'Where the Mind is Without Fear" comes out shallow when we find people still following the rules and traditions according to which women were not given equal status in the society. People are still fighting in the name of religion, region, and opinions. There are still people who for their personal gains indulge in scams not thinking about the common man and their plight. Leaders still ensure making fortune for all their coming generations in the name of governance. Where do we see high thinking? If we ever see it, that doesn't even make a drop in the huge ocean of humanity. I wish those handful people who have been able to maintain high thinking are able to inspire others to emulate them. Sudha Murty, Shiv Nadar, Prem Aziz, Krishnamurthy are the few people who we look up to and feel proud about.

I conclude my speech with a request to my audience to please introspect and find how we can fulfill the dreams of Gandhi and Tagore. I would implore them to at least maintain one ideal by which we can end the trends that have been demeaning for our country and humanity.

                           Simple Living: High Thinking

Good morning everyone present. I feel immensely privileged to have got the opportunity to express my views on 'Simple Living: High Thinking'. Longfellow says, ‘In character, in manners, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.’ Simplicity is a great virtue ─ more talked than practiced! Simplicity makes life not only easy, comfortable, enjoyable, but beautiful also. Nature is the greatest demonstrator of simplicity. The sun shines so simply; the stars twinkle without any subterfuge; rivers flow so innocently; flowers bloom so simply! All great men of all times have been simple personalities. There was nothing complex in them. They dedicated all their lives in making the complex the simple. Jesus, Newton, Lincoln, Einstein, Viveakananda, Yogananda, Mahatama Gandhi, Kabir, Tagore, Bhagat Puran Singh, etc, all were simple men. However, their thinking was sublimely high.

In the modern times, the virtue of simplicity has become almost extinct! The modern generation is obsessed with fashion! They admire complex things. More sophisticated gadgets, elaborate attires with sundry accessories; their lifestyle is quite complex. This pro-complex living style has taken its toll. They are restless, stressed, and always suffering from anxiety syndrome. They don’t know what peace of mind is! The one cause of their many problems is the lack of the principle of ‘Simple Living: High Thinking’.

If life is to be lived optimally, it is possible only through simple living and high thinking. This is the time-tested and certified protocol for a happy, healthy, and splendid life. All great men used this principle and they advised the succeeding posterity to do the same. Let’s adopt it and live a grand life!
