Abstract

Many parents believe that contemporary Television advertisements are changing the behavior of their children. Children demand more of the products whose advertisements they like. According to them, TV ads have a lot of impact on children who may resort to blackmailing and nagging their parents to purchase the advertised products. Whereas a few parents opine that TV ads are a source of knowledge to them. But no one can deny its importance as a factor that drives their product choice. The present study strives to find out whether children love watching television so much that they prefer it over social interaction, physical and developmental activities or they just use it as a leisure activity. TV ads also educate the children regarding many issues. It can also help in inculcation good habits and civic sense in them. This aspect cannot be left unseen. Today’s interactive television is a huge ocean of knowledge to which the older generation was deprived. This study is an attempt to know which side of the coin is more powerful. Is TV advertisement a source of nuisance among our children or is it trying to make them better citizens of tomorrow?

Introduction

Today, children are less innocent flowers and rather more practiced consumers with detailed knowledge of various products and brands available in the market. An average British child between eight and 13 is exposed to 22,000 television commercials a year – 300,000 if you include radio, television, print ads, billboards and the Internet. This places British youth third in the ranks of media-exposed kids in the world – after the US and Australia. (Martin Lindstrom, 2003)Today even in India, Television has come up in a huge way and advertising is a huge multimillion-dollar industry that has an enormous impact on the development of a child (Clay, 2000).Parents believe that there is change in the behavior of children when they watch television ads. Television ads sometimes have a negative impact on children since whenever they come across an advertisement, they demand to purchase the advertised product. Refusal of such requests often results in conflict. They think that children need some kind of protection from advertisements. (Sullivan, 2005) Television advertising offers product and brand-related ideas and information to children that results in purchase request to parents (Sullivan, 2005). This issue- to what extent television advertisements is effective in defining and changing the buying behavior of children-is worth investigating, and has motivated us to undertake this study. Indian marketers are increasingly targeting children because they find children are the only market segment that do not change their preferences rapidly and are easy to influence through advertisements.

Television is considered a wonderful invention of science. This is called Doordarshan in Hindi as we can see far objects of other places. Looking at the scenes on Doordarshan, the events seem to be falling apart in front of the eyes. This tool has become very popular today, entertaining the public and telling the news of the country and the world.

The television was invented by scientist J. L. Baird. Initially, only white and white images were seen on this. Now colorful pictures can be seen on this. In the color the picture taken, we get to see that image in the same color. Programs on television are broadcast from its center which have been made in place by various broadcasters. These centers can be called studios. Communications satellites are supported in broadcasting programs on television. Broadcasting has become digital nowadays, so that viewers can see clean pictures.

The television comes with a big packet of entertainment programs for the audience. In other words, it presents such entertaining programs that the viewers are in a dilemma, who see and who leaves them. This dilemma is because the first channel was the official Doordarshan and now there are hundred hundred channels. Every channel keeps going on and off some day or night. If no film is showing then a serial. Somebody is playing a game of the kingdom, then somebody at the street show No circus is showing any magic. Somebody is going to dance and sing, then somebody has seen the eyes of the game. There are also many channels to hear and show the news. The same news repeatedly listens to be bored.

The invent of television caused a stir in the entertainment world. Those who used to crowd out the cinemas at the cinema theaters, now sit in front of television in the house and enjoy films. Children became silver They started looking at cartoons of comics and watching cartoon serials on television. Housewife started entertaining talks with the neighbors in the afternoon and sat in front of television and saw the serial of Saas-Bahu.It means that everybody on television finds its worthwhile programs.

There are many problems in daily life. The working person gets tired of resolving all day long conflicts. He entertains himself after watching television for some time in the evening. Through this, students learn many things of knowledge through it. The farmers get news of the weather. They learn the methods of obtaining good crops. Housewives learn the techniques of home-skills. General importance information is broadcast on television. Through this, awareness of the environment spreads. Seeing the competitions of Olympic Games, Asian Games and other important sports are attracting young sportsmen.

Television has now become a necessity of home. Cable is now added to the television set, through which different types of channels can be seen. Monthly fees are charged to consumers instead of this service. By the way, people are now moving one step further to D.T.H. Have entered the era of D.T.H. That is, the 'Direct to Home' service is arranged to see different channels without cable. There is a set top box in the house for this.

Television has many advantages and there are some losses too. It has taken people into the era of maximum entertainment. Seeing more television produces many eye-and-brain problems. Seeing hours of watching television gives birth to physical fatigue and lethargy. The time the people used to spend in social work, now the gift of television is climbing. Children can be seen sticking to television instead of playing games. Therefore, people should watch television only at the scheduled time by avoiding any kind of excess.
