To aid hungry nations or not, is a complex issue. One that, I myself, have had some trouble even formulating an idea. Initially, when I think of this, I immediately say “Yes, we help!” But after reviewing some of the literature, case studies and political views on the subject, I am not so sure. For instance, sending aid to another country in order to minimize people from starving to death, is not our moral duty. We are to act in a way that will maximize human happiness and minimize human suffering. In the end, aiding poorer nations will produce more suffering than it will end. It is believed that nations with the highest average of poverty also have the highest rates of birth. If we are to provide aid to these countries, we are only allowing more reproduction, thereby creating even more demands on the world’s limited resources (Andre, Vasquez). This viewpoint has brought me to a very difficult crossroad. How can I objectively see myself through this dilemma? I do what every other American does; I pretend it doesn’t exist and say, “pass the potatoes, please.” Does this attitude mean that I am immoral, that I have no understanding of what is happening outside of my inner community?
