There is an ancient proverb about fear and courage being brothers and it happens to be both apt and accurate. Today, we are discussing courage; the fact is that I even needed a bit of courage to come up here and give the speech in the first place. So what is courage? Courage essentially is being brave in the face of fear, and even though the fear may be unreasonable, the act of overcoming this fear itself constitutes courage.
Courage (also called bravery or valour) is the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Physical courage is bravery in the face of physical pain, hardship, death or threat of death, while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition[1], shame, scandal, discouragement, or personal loss.
The classical virtue of fortitude (andreia, fortitudo) is also translated "courage", but includes the aspects of perseverance and patience.[2]
In the Western tradition, notable thoughts on courage have come from philosophers, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Kierkegaard; as well as Judeo-Christian beliefs and texts.
