When the sphere with mass m strikes the mass 2m elastically, momentum and kinetic energy is conserved.

Momentum Conservation:

mv+ 0= m(va)+ 2m(vb).......(a)

=> v= va+ 2vb

squaring both sides, v2= va2+4vb2+4(va×vb).....(1)

Kinetic energy conservation

mv2=mva2+2mvb2

v2=va2+2vb2 .....(2)

subtracting 2 from 1 we get

vb=-2va

substituting in (a) we have

va=-v/3

vb=2v/3
