Sponge is a solid yet we able to compress it. why?

It is not sponge that compress,it is only the air in the pores of the sponge that compress.

Sponge is a solid yet we able to compress it because it has holes in it.
When we compress the sponge the air goes out of those pores. When we leave the sponge, it remains as a solid.
