H. V. Wilson from the University of North Carolina had first performed an experiment in which he passed a sponge through a sieve. The sponge disintegrated and it was then put in a saucer of sea water, in which they tiny sponge parts were moving around. This shows that the sponges are made of individual cells which can grow and live on their even when the whole sponge is disintegrated. They tend to move around and when they come across other tiny sponge cells, they aggregate to form bigger sponges. However, the cells form aggregates only when they are the same species.
The sponges are Poriferans which are classified into 3 other classes - Calcarea, Demospongiae, and Hexactinellida.
The pores have 2 significant purposes - bringing in water and nutrients, and to take out the waste materials and carbon dioxide.
Most sponges have spicules, calciferous spikes, or sticky threads which they use to protect themselves from the predators.

Sponges belongs to animal kingdom: Porifera
The word Porifera means organisms with holes.
These are non motile animals that are attached to some solid support.
Sponges have holes or pores all over their body .
They have simple body design and loosely arranged cell layers.
These holes lead to a canal system that helps in circulating water throughout the body to bring in food and oxygen.
These animals are covered with a hard outside layer or skeleton which help in protecting them.
Sponges are mainly found in marine habitats.
