First take a guess and call it x1 .

98 is very close to 100 (which is a perfect square), so my first guess is x1=10 .

Now examine how far you are from the desired answer.

x21=(10)2=100 . So we are off by 2 . Call this difference, d , so d=2 .

Calculate d2x1=220=0.1

Our first guess overestimated the answer, so now we should subtract d2x1 from our initial guess ( x1 ).

x2=10−0.1=9.9

As you can see x2 is already a quite good estimation of 98−−√=9.9 ( 98−−√≈9.8994 )

If you want to find the answer with more accuracy, repeat the same procedure, only this time, take x2 as your first guess. And so on...

 \sqrt{98}

 =  \sqrt{7 \times 7 \times 2}

 = 7 \sqrt{2}

 = 7 \times 1.414

 = 9.898

HOPE THAT HELPS!!
