Srila Prabhupada was seeing that after gaining independence, Indians had lost interest in their own vedic culture and were going towards the western culture. But Srila Prabhupada wanted to bring western people to India to motivate Indians to understand the value of their own culture. Srila Prabhupada used to say that "Indians are sitting on diamonds (i.e. rich spiritual culture of India) but looking for the broken pieces of glass (i.e. modern western culture)". He made 3 large temples in Mayapur, Vrindavana and Bombay. Now today there are more than 600 temples and centers all around the world.
