•In Europe initially the reduction in the cost of books or diversification of mechanical press did not yield a vast readership as people were illiterate.

•But during the 19th century,churches of different denominations started carrying education to peasants and artisans which led to a sudden boom in readership.

•The newly emerged readers preferred books of different genre.Targeting them the publishers started producing penny books carried around by pedlars such as chapbook in britain and biliotheque bleue in France.

•The emergence of periodical press also added to the readership as it carried information regarding wars,trade and was also a source of entertainment.
