The daughter of Lord Ullin and a Scottish chieftain decide to elope in fear of Lord Ullin's wrath, because he did not approve of their relationship. They quickly ask the boatman to hurry up and take them across the Lochgyle river.
They introduce themselves and offer him a silver pound because the weather was stormy.
They also explain that Lord Ullin's men were chasing them and would soon find them. They say that this is an emergency. The chieftain says ' if her father slays me, then who will cheer my beloved?'
The boatman agrees to take them across the river in the harsh weather because he was charmed by the lady's beauty and not in greed of the money.
The storm grew louder and louder , the water was shrieking, the night grew drearer and her father's men became closer.
Soon the boat started in the roaring river. When lord ullin reached there, his anger turned into sorrow and he wept for his daughter. He cried that 'You can marry your beloved, but please don't leave me!' But his pleas were of no use as the waters fell over them and the couple finally died.
