I lay in want, and grief and pain,
A poor man passed my way,
He bound my head, he gave me bread,
He watched me night and day.
How shall I pay him back again
For all he did to me?
Oh, gold is great, but greater far
Is heavenly sympathy.

Answer 1- When the poet was in difficulty the second time a poor man helped him.
Answer 2 - The poor man gave the poet bread to eat.
Answer 3 - The poet feels that he could not give back what the poor man did for him because we can easily pay back money to a person but we can not return the ‘time’ when he helped us.
Answer 4-The poet calls sympathy heavenly as only godly persons can feel the pain of others.
