The new measurement of HR 5171 A shows they can be much bigger. HR 5171 A is 50 per cent larger than the red hypergiant Betelgeuse, which is located in the constellation Orion and is the ninth brightest star in the night sky.

There are two types of stars that are much larger than our Sun: giant stars and supergiant stars.
Dwarfs and giants are two of the possible classifications of stars. Dwarf stars come in a few different 'colors,' or categorizations: yellow, orange, red, and brown dwarfs are younger, vibrant stars and white and black dwarfs are smaller, dying stars. Our Sun is a yellow dwarf star. There are then blue and red giant stars, as well as blue and red supergiants.
Stars can change size over time as well. A dwarf star could become a giant star, particularly near the end of its life. Giant stars tend to have a lower temperature than dwarf stars.
