जैसा कि हम जानते हैं कि तारे हमसे बोहोत दूर हैं तो तारों से आने वाले प्रकाश को हम तक पहुंचने में इन विभिन्न परतों को पार करना पड़ता है इन परतों की विभिन्न घनत्व होने के कारण तारो से आने वाला प्रकाश अपने सीधे मार्ग में ना आकर अपने सीधे मार्ग से विचलित हो जाता है ,अतः जब तारों का प्रकाश हमारी आँखों पे पड़ता है तो वह हमें दिखाई देतें है और जब अपवर्तन की वजह से ये हमे टिमटिमाते हुए दिखाई देते हैं.
