Answer:Preparation of Ethane

When iodomethane or methyl iodide is treated with sodium metal in the presence of ether as solvent, ethane is formed.

2CH3I + 2Na ————→ C2H6 (ethane) + 2NaI

In this reaction other products are also formed.

Preparation of Ethene

From what I know, you cannot prepare ethene from iodomethane (methyl iodide) but from ethyl iodide.

When ethyl iodide or iodoethane is treated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide, it produces ethene.

CH3-CH2-I + KOH —————-> CH2=CH2 + KI + H2O

Answer:

Ethane preparation

  • Ethane is produced when sodium metal is used to treat iodomethane or methyl iodide in the presence of ether as a solvent.
  • C2H6 (ethane) + 2NaI ⇒ 2CH3I + 2Na
  • Other products are also produced in this reaction.

Making of Ethene

  • Iodomethane (methyl iodide), as far as I'm aware, cannot be used to make ethene; only ethyl iodide can.
  • Alcoholic potassium hydroxide is used to treat ethyl iodide or iodoethane to create ethene.
  • KOH + CH3-CH2-I ⇒ KI + H2O + CH2 = CH2.
  • The United States Environmental Protection Agency had certified iodomethane for use as a pesticide in 2007 as a pre-plant biocide used to combat insects, plant parasitic nematodes, soil borne diseases, and weed seeds.
