Given :

Starting from rest a car is moving with uniform acceleration.

To Find :

What happens if time of travel is doubled.

Solution :

⧪ In this case, body has constant acceleration throughout the motion. Therefore we can apply equation of kinematics to calculate distance covered by car.

  • Initial velocity of car is zero.

Let constant acceleration of car be a and distance covered by car in time t be d.

By applying second equation of kinematics;

➠ d = ut + 1/2 at²

➠ d = 0 + 1/2 at²

d = 1/2 at² _____ (I)

In second case, time of journey is doubled.

⭆ d' = ut + 1/2 at'²

⭆ d' = 0 + 1/2 a (2t)²

⭆ d' = 4 × 1/2 at²

From the equation (I);

d' = 4 × d

Car will cover four times distance in the second case.
