Another defect of the Weimar Republic was article 48, which gave the President the powers to impose emergency, suspend civil rights and rule by decree.

Thus people lost their faith in the democratic parliamentary system and allow for a dictatorship to develop.

But the political divisions of the 1920s meant that these coalitions were fragile and unstable. Some parties, especially those on the radical fringes, refused to participate in Reichstag coalitions, or they entered them reluctantly or insincerely. This was also a reason that prevented the Weimar republic from being truly successful.
