Decomposition reaction is the type of reaction in which the reactant give simpler products.
In Decomposition reaction a compound breaks down to give two or more simpler substances. In this reaction there is only one reactant. Decomposition reaction is the opposite of a combination reaction.
Important uses of decomposition reactions :
1.In the extraction of zinc from its carbonate Ore (Calamine) ZnCO3
ZnCO3 (s) → ZnO (s) + CO2 (g)

2. Electrolysis of molten Aluminium oxide to form aluminium :  In the industrial process for the manufacture of aluminium.
When electricity is passed from molten Aluminium(III) oxide ,  aluminium and oxygen are obtained.
2Al2O3 (l) → 4Al (l) + 3O2 (g)

3. In electrolytic decomposition of water to form hydrogen and oxygen   :
Water is decomposed to give hydrogen and oxygen when electricity is passed through it containing a little sulphuric acid.
2H2O → 2H2 (g) + O2 (g)

4. In black and white photography :
Silver Chloride(white) and Silver Bromide(white) undergoes photochemical decomposition to form grey silver metal in the presence of Sunlight.
2AgCl (s) →(sunlight)  2Ag (s) + Cl2 (g)
2AgBr(s) →(sunlight)  2Ag (s) + Br2 (g)

5. To obtain Sodium metal from sodium chloride.
By the electrolysis of molten sodium chloride.
2NaCl (l)  →(electricity) 2Na (s) + Cl2(g)
