Answer:

The Pauli Exclusion Principle states that, in an atom or molecule, no two electrons can have the same four electronic quantum numbers. As an orbital can contain a maximum of only two electrons, the two electrons must have opposing spins.

Answer: Refer the explanation for answer

Explanation:

It is impossible for two electrons with the same spin quantum number to be in the same orbital.

                                                            (or)

No two electrons in an atom can have the set values for all the four quantum numbers.

This means that in an atom may have the same n,l and m but differ in spin quantum number. In an orbital , one electron has clockwise spin while the other has anti-clockwise spin . It follows that an orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons with opposite spins.

for example,Helium atom has two electrons in its 1s orbital.

Quantum numbers for the first electron are in Helium atom n=1,l= 0,m= 0 and s=+half

Quantum numbers for the second electron are in Helium atom n= 1,l= 0, m= 0 and s = - half

The two electrons have the same value for n,l and m but differ in s. The maximum capacity of a main energy shell is equal to 2n square electrons and of a sub shell is equal to 4l + 2.
