In India, the occurrence of coal appears in rock form in two geological terms specifically, Gondwana where 200 million years of time coal is discovered and in tertiary deposits where old coal is available.

The significant reserves of Gondwana coal known as metallurgical coal and they are found largely in Damodar Valley. Bokaro Jharia, Raniganj, are valuable coal fields found in this region.

Maximum of the coal fields are discovered from the narrow belt operating in an east-west orientation. Significant coalfields are also found in Dumka, Palamu, Hazaribagh, and Dhanbad.
