Basically, There are 5 criteria for classifying living organisms :

Here are (first) two basic criteria:

#1. Organisms are, firstly, classified on the basis of advancement of cell i.e. prokaryotic or eukaryotic. All prokaryotes are kept under first kingdom 'Kingdom Monera'.

#2. Then, all the organisation are further divided on the basis of number of their cells i.e. unicellular or multicellular.
