The script of the Indus Valley Civilization was the one of the earliest know writing systems in India. The script is in symbols and signs and is found on different objects used by the people like ornaments, pottery, tools etc.

The following are two ways in which the script provides us with valuable historical information:

a) The script can be found on clay tags that were used for identification of goods. Some of these tags were found in excavations in Mesopotamia region. Hence we can deduce that trade used to be carried on with other countries during the times to as far as Mesopotamia.

b) From the signs and symbols, historians and archeologists concluded that the Harappans probably cultivated rice and cotton etc. They may have invented the game of chess too.
