Those substances which gives {H}^{+} ion in aqueous solution are known as acid.

Example :

HCl (aq) ==> {H}^{+} (aq) + {Cl}^{-}

CH_{3}COOH (aq) ==> CH_{3}{COO}^{-} (aq) + {H}^{+} (aq)

Those substances which gives {OH}^{-} ion in aqueous solution are known as bases.

Example :

NaOH (aq) ==> {Na}^{+} (aq) + {OH}^{-} (aq)

KOH (aq) ==> {K}^{+} (aq) + {OH}^{-} (aq)
