Cell theory was formulated together by Matthias Schleiden and Theodore Schwann. Matthias Schleiden studied plant cells in 1838 and Theodore Schwann studied animal cells in 1839, then they jointly gave the cell theory. According to this theory:Everyu organism, whether unicellular or multicellular, is made up of cells.Cell is the basic unit of life.
But this theory did not give any explanation about the origin of cells. Rudolf Virchow first explained that new cells are formed from division of pre existing cells. He improved the cell theory in 1855 by adding that every cell arises from pre existing cells i.e., omnis cellula e cellula.

The Cell Theory is one of the basic principles of biology. Credit for the formulation of this theory is given to German scientists Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolph Virchow.

The Cell Theory states:

All living organisms are composed of cells. They may be unicellular or multicellular. The cell is the basic unit of life.Cells arise from pre-existing cells.
