So as cavities form when enamel gets corroded with repeated action of acids formed by bacteria that need pH of the mouth to be acidic, and releases acids from the food sticking to teeth, toothpaste helps to clean the food also, preventing cavities.

The condition when enamel starts corroding is called as dental caries.
