Explanation:

Acids react with metals to produce compound and hydrogen gas while bases do not react with metals . Acids are able to increase the H+ ions concentration in an aqueous solution whereas Bases are able to increase the OH- ions in an aqueous solution.

Answer:

THE DIFFERENCES BTW ACIDS AND BASES ARE AS FOLLOWS

ACIDS

  1. Acids are defined as compounds which contain one or more hyrdogen atoms and when dissolved in water, produce hydronium ions (H3O+) the only positively charged ions.
  2. They are sour to taste
  3. Some of them are solid and some are liquids at room temperature.
  4. All mineral acids have corrosive action on the skin and cause painful burns.
  5. They change the colour of indicators. (Litmus-Blue to red, Methyl orange-Orange to pink, Phenolphthalein-Remains colourless)

BASES

  1. Base is either a metallic oxide or a metallic hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide which reacts with hydronium ions of an acid to form salt and water only.
  2. They have sharp and bitter taste.
  3. They are soapy substances i.e they are slippery to touch.
  4. They show a mild corrosive action on the skin(slight burn).
  5. They change the colour of indicators. (Litmus-Red to Blue, Methyl orange-Orange to yellow, Phenolphthalein-Colourless to pink).
