e.c of hydrogen is 1 only..it is placed in group 1st because it also combines with halogens...like chlorine,bromine to form compounds having similar formulae..as well as in VII group..it is placed because it also in the form of diatomic molecule..H2 like halogens..F2,BR2 etc..
