Five Applications of JOULE-THOMPSON EFFECT:
First of all, let's explain JOULE THOMSON EFFECT in the easiest way :
- Whenever a gas is adiabatically expanded (i.e. adiabatic decompression), the temperature of the gas falls rapidly.
- Now, when we talk about adiabatic process, it should be kept in mind that no heat exchange occurs with the surroundings.
Now, the real life applications of this effect:
- This effect is extensively used in the compressors of air conditioners and refrigerators to release cold air.
- Now, opposite phenomenon of heat generation can be used to understand leaking valves in hydraulic parts of a machine.
- Many gases like Neon and Argon (having very low boiling points) can be liquefied in this process.
- Petrochemical industries use LINDE'S TECHNIQUE as a classical method for liquification of gases.
- The cooling is so extensive, that even liquid Helium can be obtained.
