Whenever a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force due to the magnetic field. The direction of force acting on the conductor can be found out using Fleming's Left Hand Rule.
In an electric motor, the electric current and magnetic field exist (which are the causes), and they lead to the force that creates the motion (which is the effect), and so the left hand rule is used.

Fleming's left hand rule:
Fleming’s left hand rule states that if we arrange the thumb, the centre finger, and the forefinger of the left hand at right angles to each other, then the thumb points towards the direction of the magnetic force, the centre finger gives the direction of current, and the forefinger points in the direction of magnetic field.
