Myanmar gained independence from colonial rule in 1948 and became a democracy Soon after in 1962 democratic rule ended with a military coup. In 1900,elections were held for the first time after almost 30 years The national league of democracy led by aung saan suu kyi won the elections but the military officers refused to step back The officers put the elected leaders including suu kyi ,political activists accused and even the most were jailed Anyone caught publicly airing issues and statements critical of the government were put in prison Despite being under house arrest suu kyi continued to campaign for democracy and recentlg she has won parliamentary elections
