But for meiosis, fertilization would have resulted in the zygotes having as many as twice the number of chromosomes than zygotes of the previous generation. In meiosis, the chromosome number is first halved.


Later on, the haploid gamete fuses with another haploid gamete. These gametes then form the Diploid Zygote that is denoted by a 2n.

Meiosis can divide the amount of chromosome and its DNA content into two types during the formation of the gametes those fuse eventually and the diploidy can be restored.

The Meiosis is the type of cell division which can result four daughter cells and reduce the chromosome numbers in half.
