Veld

It is a type of wide open rural landscape. It is found in Southern Africa. It is a flat area covered in grass or low shrubs.

The climate is highly variable. It has mild winters from May to September. There are hot or very hot summers from November to March. There is moderate or considerable variation in daily temperatures. Precipitation takes place in the summer months in the form of high-energy thunderstorms.

The soil of the sandveld is dry and sandy. It absorbs all the water from the seasonal rains. But seasonal aquatic habitats can also be found in specific places. Highveld soils are thin, poor and powdery. Middleveld soil is thin and poor. The soil of the lowveld is deep, leached, acidic, porous and well-drained.

Prairies

They are ecosystems which are considered to be a part of the temperate grasslands, savannas and shrublands biome on the basis of similar temperate climates, moderate rainfall and vegetation which consists of grasses, herbs and shrubs.

In North America the prairie are divided into three groups. They are wet, mesic and dry. Depending on the quality of the soil and rainfall they are characterized by tallgrass prairie, mixed or shortgrass prairie.

In wet prairies the soil is very moist. It is excellent for farming. It has poor drainage. In mesic prairies there is good drainage in the soil. These prairies can be converted for agricultural usage. In dry prairies the soil is somewhat wet to very dry because of good drainage in the soil.
