1=the molecule must have 4n + 2 electrons in p orbitals (on sp2 or sp hybridized carbon or heteroatoms)
2=the molecule must be (close to) planar (porbitals must be roughly parallel and able to interact)
3=the molecule must be cyclic (as opposed to linear)
