Question

State law of conservation of mass.

Answer

Law of conservation of mass

1)In simple words it states that in a closed system the mass can niether be created nor being destroyed.

Here closed system means that different forms of mass and energy are not allowed to move in or out of the system.

2)This law is widely used in field of thermodynamics, mechanics, etc.

3)During the 18th Century a great scientist Antoine Lavoisier rediscovered this term which made it's crucial part in the field Of Chemistry.

4) It was so important that it was made one of the Fundamental laws in Chemistry.

It is used to balance the mass of products with that of reactants.

Example=>

2H20 ---------->2H2 + O2

On electrolysis of water, hydrogen and oxygen are obtained in gaseous states in cathode and anode rods.

Here we can see that in the system, the mass of =>

LHS (Reactants)

Water(H2O) = 2(1) + 16 = 18gm

RHS(Products)

Hydrogen(H2) = 2(1) = 2 gm

Oxygen(O2) = 16gm

So,total mass of products= 16+2 = 18gm

Hence we see that

LHS=RHS

So,mass is conserved throughout the whole process.

This proves Law of Conservation of mass.

5)But when we come under branch of physics then this law needs some modifications according to Einstein's famous mass-energy equivalence >

E = mc^2

Where

E= energy

m= mass and

c= speed of light.

And this states that energy and mass forms one conserved quantity.

6)Mass is generally not being conserved in an open system where the different forms of matters and energy are allowed to move in and out of the system.
