The two organs of State Legislature are Legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha) and Legislative council of a state (Vidhan Parishad).

Both the houses of the state have their own criteria of selecting the members, as suggested in the constitution and by the parliament and have their own tenures for the members of the state.

Though the Legislative council of a state is permanent house like the Rajya Sabha one-third of its members retire after every two years.
