Hi friend.

Your lens formula is
 \frac{1}{f}  =  \frac{1 }{v}  -  \frac{1}{u}

f refers to focal length.

u refers to Object distance

v refers to image distance in the lens.

As per the Cartesian Sign Convention,

In concave lens,
u,v,f are all negative as it diverging back.

In Convex lens,
u is negative and all others are positive.

u is negative because always object is placed behind the lens or in front of it.
