As per 2001 census tribes constitute 84.4 million people which accounts
around 8.2 per cent oi‘ lndia’s population. The concentration of tribal population
is seen in states like Jammu and Kashmir, Hiinachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh,
Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland,
Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa and to a lesser extent in Andhra Pradesh
which is bounded by river Narmada in the north and river Godavari in the South
east. The tribal people generally occupy the slopes of the mountains. The tribals
also inhabit the tract extending from the western coast of Gujarat and Maharastra
passing through central India up to the north-eastern region.
Most of the tribals are concentrated in the central belt of the country
comprising of Gujarat, Maharastra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh,
Orissa, Bihar and West Bengal. The largest tribal population is found in Madhya
Pradesh. A little less than one fourth of the total scheduled tribe population resides
in Madhya Pradesh. The extent, to which a state's population is tribal, varies
considerably. In Lakshadweep and Mizoram the tribes constitute more than ninety
per cent of the population. In Northeastern states of Meghalaya and Nagaland
more than eighty percent of the total population are tribals followed by Arunachal
Pradesh and Dadra And Nagar Haveli with nearly two third of the population,
between twenty and thirty five per cent in Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura,
Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. Nearly 10 per cent in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharastra,
Assam, and Andaman and Nicobar Island, nearly six per cent or less in Himachal
Pradesh, Kamataka and West Bengal and one or less than one per cent in Kerala,
Tamil Nadu, Goa, Daman and Diu are tribals.
Scheduled Tribes (ST) have been enumerated in 25 out of the 30 States
